The interior of the storage compartment is lined with rich green velvet which cushions the chessmen for easy and safe transport. The whole base is covered with Green Velvet. The board doubles up as a box containing the pieces and the design is carved into the wood. The dark squares are carefully stained to allow the natural beauty of the wood grain to shine through. The chessmen are made from hornbeam wood, which is carved and finished by hand. The dark playing pieces are stained and lacquered in a way that allows the natural wood grain to show through, the lighter pieces are natural wood similar in color to the lighter squares on the board and lacquered.
